HELP FOR THE END USER:
• How do you get a KINDLE file from your computer to the reader?
The best way is to use a free program called Calibre. Once downloaded to your computer, you add the Kindle file to the Calibre library. When you plug in your Kindle to the computer using the USB port, you can use the copy-to-device tool.
• Does the same thing hold true if you are on a tablet or phone and trying to open the document?
With a tablet or phone, it's easier to email the Kindle file to the reader's email address and open it from the email (as long as the kindle app is installed).
It is an exciting time for the publishing industry. More people are reading than ever before, due to the explosion of eBooks and eBook readers. The eBook industry, however, is still in the process of maturing, with several different competing eBook formats and readers on the market. Each of these has its own specifications and “quirks,” compounding the difficulty of navigating the eBook scene.
Many eBook conversion services offer an inexpensive “meat-grinder” approach to creating eBooks. They simply run Word or Acrobat documents through an automated conversion process. The results, however, leave much to be desired. In order to stand out in the eBook marketplace, it is important that eBooks be specifically designed and carefully formatted for their intended destination platform. That’s why you need the expertise of eBook design professionals who are knowledgeable and experienced in the eBook core code, best formatting practices, and marketing platforms.

There are TWO primary platforms for Readers.
First, the EPUB format is rapidly gaining popularity. As of 2011, it is the most widely supported vendor-independent XML-based eBook format. The format can be read at least by the Kobo eReader, Apple's iBooks app running on iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony Reader, BeBook, Bookeen Cybook Gen3 (with firmware v. 2 and up), COOL-ER, Adobe Digital Editions, Lexcycle Stanza, BookGlutton, AZARDI, FBReader, Aldiko and WordPlayer on Android, Freda on Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7, and the Mozilla Firefox add-on EPUBReader. Several other desktop reader software programs are currently implementing support for the format, such as dotReader, FBReader, Mobipocket, uBook and Okular. Another software .epub reader, Lucidor, is in beta.
Secondly, the only notable device lacking integrated support for the EPUB format is the Amazon Kindle, although there have recently been reports that the Kindle will soon support this format.
